Reclaiming Attention: A Manifesto for a Kinder Digital Future

“It’s okay to look away.”

A Wake-Up Scroll

It starts small.
A ping. A buzz. A “quick” scroll.
And suddenly, an hour has vanished… or two.

From the tiny hands of a child watching endless reels
to a retired elder forwarding videos late into the night,
we’re all caught in something—
a loop we never signed up for.

What if I told you… it’s not your fault?

The Dopamine Dilemma

Your brain is wired to seek novelty. To feel rewarded when something new or exciting happens. That’s dopamine doing its job.

But today’s digital design doesn’t play fair.
Apps and platforms are crafted to trigger this reward system—again and again.
Not to help you.
But to keep you there.

This isn’t about addiction in the classic sense.
It’s about being conditioned—slowly—
to need stimulation to feel okay.

Why Some Fall Deeper Than Others

  • Some people have more sensitive reward systems.
  • Others are just more stressed, lonely, or overwhelmed.
  • Many never learned how to pause—or even that they could.

We switch tasks constantly,
not because we’re lazy or weak-willed,
but because our environment rewards it.

What We’re Losing

  • The joy of slowness
  • The power of deep focus
  • The peace in silence
  • The bonding moments offline
  • Even our sense of self, buried under dopamine loops

But There’s Hope

The same technology that distracts us
can be redesigned to nurture us.

And it starts with awareness.

The Mindful Design Manifesto

Let’s build a digital world that respects our minds.
Here’s a vision we can all share—designers, developers, teachers, parents, and thinkers:

  1. Attention is Sacred
Design should honor time and focus—not steal it.
  2. Delight, Not Dependence
    Craft joyful experiences, not traps.
  3. End the Infinite Scroll
    Let people pause. Stop. Reflect.
  4. Value Over Urgency
Kill fake FOMO. Promote peace of mind.
  5. Gentle Nudges, Not Alarms
One ping is enough. Let users breathe.
  6. Support Digital Rest
Wind-down modes. Sleep-timers. Stillness is good UX.
  7. Transparent by Default
No hidden buttons. No manipulative CTAs.
  8. Built for All Minds
Kids, elders, neurodivergent users—design with kindness.

How Do We Get There?

  • Start by noticing your own patterns.
  • Limit auto-play. Turn off unnecessary notifications.
  • Take dopamine fasts—an hour a day without digital input.
  • Talk to children early about mindful usage.
  • If you're a designer, design with empathy.
  • If you're a user, demand better.

A Vision for the Future

Imagine a world where:

  • Children grow up with curiosity—not compulsions.
  • Adults find purpose beyond the next notification.
  • Apps encourage you to log off, not lean in forever.
  • Tech respects humans, not just metrics.

It’s possible.
It starts with one mindful choice at a time.

Odiyur Lake

Whenever I used to drive in ECR I always wanted to blog about this place. It is Odiyur a village 52 Km from Pondicherry and 90 Km from Chennai. Why am I talking about this village? Actually not about this village it is about the lake in this village. Odiyur Lake is a boon for most of the photographers, people who love fishing and bird watching. People who travel to Pondicherry from Chennai, Odiyur Lake serve as a perfect relaxing spot. One of the biggest lakes you can find between ECR (East Coast Road). Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation has planted Mudaliyarkuppam Boat House(Now called as Raindrop Boat House ) in Odiyur back waters. The boat house stands out from others in Tamil Nadu by offering Jet Ski and Kayaking in additional to Row boats, Banana rides and Speed boats.  Raindrop Boat House -Jet Ski They have this package of 600 bucks per person with complimentary banana ride, few kayaks, veg and non veg lunch and finally a trip inside a island kinda pl...

Embracing Writing Again: My Journey from Paper to Mobile, Desktop and Beyond

I want to write again, but now I've become more accustomed to using my mobile phone to jot down thoughts. However, I still enjoy the traditional method of writing on paper. Whatever the case, not having a laptop should never stop me from posting or writing from anywhere. It's been a while, everyone. After many years, I'm back to writing and doing the routines I've longed for. I didn’t want to post a lot because what I was writing felt too personal and real, and I didn’t want to express my content through a straightforward moral lens. So, I thought I could create a story of my own based on personal experiences and the lessons life has taught me so far. For starters, I’m going to hit 34 this September. I’m pretty sure my previous audience consisted mostly of my childhood friends or relatives, with a few others, as I wasn’t consistent enough in adding content. Anyway, let’s now focus globally. I mean, I can write stories and maybe publish them in two main languages for no...
